What to Wear to an Elephant Sanctuary in Jaipur

Last updated: 2 October 2026 · By Mohit Bhat, Elefriendride

Wear light, comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting wet, dusty or stained, plus closed shoes with good grip. Add a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the Jaipur sun.

If you visit between March and October, bring a full change of clothes and a towel, because elephant bathing will soak you.

I spend my days at our sanctuary and meet guests every morning who are either perfectly dressed or wishing they had packed differently. This guide covers what works, what to avoid and a simple checklist you can follow.

The Short Answer: What to Wear
  • Loose T-shirt or light shirt in a dark or patterned colour
  • Shorts, light trousers or quick-dry leggings
  • Closed shoes or trainers with good grip
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • One warm layer from November to February

Think of it like a day on a farm, not a photo shoot at a palace. You will be close to large, curious animals, on grass, sand and sometimes mud.

Clothes: Comfort First, Colour Second

Choose breathable cotton or quick-dry fabric. Jaipur is warm for much of the year, and you will be moving, bending and walking during the visit.

Avoid white or very light clothes. Water, mud, dust and the paint used in our painting activity can all leave marks, and dark or patterned clothes hide them better.

Leave long, flowing scarves and dangling jewellery in your bag. Elephants are curious and explore with their trunks, so loose items are better kept away.

Shoes: The Most Important Choice

Wear closed shoes or trainers with a good grip. The ground can be grass, sand or wet mud, and you will be standing near feet that are much bigger than yours.

Old trainers you do not mind getting muddy are ideal. During bathing, many guests stand barefoot on the grass, and our team will tell you when that is fine.

Avoid heels, smooth-soled sandals and brand-new white shoes. They slip, they stain, or both.

If You Are Joining Elephant Bathing (March to October)

Elephant bathing at Elefriendride runs from March to October. You help wash the elephants with water, and the elephants often spray water back, so you will get wet.

  • Wear clothes that can get completely wet
  • Bring a full change of clothes and underwear
  • Pack a small towel
  • Carry a plastic bag for your wet clothes
  • Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch or with a friend

From November to February there is no bathing, so you can skip the spare clothes. You can read more about the activity on our elephant bathing in Jaipur page.

What to Wear by Season

March to June (hot): the lightest cotton you own, a wide hat and plenty of sunscreen. Bathing feels wonderful in this heat.

July to September (monsoon): quick-dry clothes and shoes you do not mind getting muddy. The ground can be soft after rain.

October (warm and dry): light clothes for the day, plus a change of clothes for bathing. Our guide to Jaipur weather in October and November has the real averages.

November to February (cool mornings): layers. A jacket or fleece for the early morning, and a T-shirt underneath for when the sun is up.

What Each Part of the Day Feels Like

The sanctuary is open every day from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the time you choose changes what you should wear.

Morning: cooler and calmer. In winter you will want a warm layer; in summer it is the most comfortable time to be outdoors.

Midday: the sun is strongest. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen matter most now, even if the air feels mild.

Late afternoon: softer, golden light that is lovely for photos. Bring a light layer in winter, as it cools quickly after sunset.

Feeding and Walking With the Elephants

Feeding is messier than people expect. Asian elephants eat grasses, leaves, bark and crops such as sugarcane and bananas, according to WWF's Asian elephant guide, and trunks can leave juice and dust on your sleeves.

For walking with the elephants, comfortable shoes matter more than anything else. See what the walk involves on our walking with elephants page, and our elephant feeding in Jaipur page for the feeding part.

Packing Checklist: What to Bring
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Change of clothes, towel and a plastic bag (March to October)
  • Warm layer (November to February)
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Insect repellent for late-afternoon visits
  • Small backpack to keep your hands free

Photography is free at our sanctuary, so bring your camera or phone with a charged battery. Some monuments in Jaipur charge a separate camera fee, so check before you visit them.

Dressing Children for the Visit

Children aged 2 and above are welcome at Elefriendride. Dress them like the adults, in clothes that can get dirty, closed shoes and a hat.

Pack a complete spare outfit for each child, even outside bathing season. Children love being close to the elephants, and they usually come home a little muddier than planned.

What Not to Wear
  • White or expensive clothes
  • Heels, flip-flops or smooth-soled sandals
  • Long loose scarves and dangling jewellery
  • Anything you would be sad to see wet or stained
Plan Your Elefriendride Visit

A visit usually lasts 2 to 4 hours, and the sanctuary is 10 to 15 km from Jaipur city centre, about 20 to 25 minutes away. The full sanctuary experience costs between ₹2,500 and ₹5,500 per person.

Feeding, bathing (March to October), painting, walking and safari are all part of it. You can see everything on our elephant sanctuary in Jaipur page, and when you are ready, send us a message to choose your time.
