So, how long do elephants live? Asian elephants usually live into their mid-50s, and some live longer. According to Smithsonian's National Zoo, the median life expectancy for female Asian elephants is 47 years.
How long an elephant lives depends a lot on its food, health care, exercise and social life. Below we explain the life stages of an elephant and what helps it live a long, healthy life.
Asian Elephant Lifespan at a Glance
- Typical lifespan: into the mid-50s.
- Median life expectancy (females): 47 years.
- Pregnancy: 21.5 to 22 months, the longest of any animal.
- Weight at birth: about 68 to 158 kg.
- Maturity in the wild: between 8 and 13 years.
- Status: Asian elephants are endangered.
These figures come from Smithsonian's National Zoo. The zoo also notes that there is not enough consistent data from the wild to give one exact lifespan.
The Life Stages of an Elephant
Calf (birth to about 5 years): after nearly two years in the womb, a calf stays close to its mother and the other females, learning what to eat and how to use its trunk.
Young elephant (about 5 to 13 years): it grows fast, becomes more independent and reaches maturity, usually between 8 and 13 years in the wild.
Adult (teens to about 40s): the strongest years. Elephants keep growing slowly through much of their life.
Older elephant (40s onwards): it slows down and needs softer food and closer health care.
How Can You Tell an Elephant's Age?
Experts usually estimate an elephant's age from its teeth. Elephants replace their large molars in a fixed order through life, and each new set is bigger than the last.
By looking at which molars are in use and how worn they are, vets can estimate age quite closely. Size, skin and the shape of the head give extra clues.
What Affects How Long an Elephant Lives?
- Food: a large, varied diet every day.
- Health care: regular checks to catch problems early, especially with feet and teeth.
- Exercise: plenty of walking and natural movement.
- Social life: stable bonds, whether with other elephants or familiar people.
- Rest and shelter: protection from extreme heat, cold and rain.
Do Elephants Live Longer in the Wild or in Captivity?
It depends on the conditions. A well-known study in the journal Science, led by zoologist Georgia Mason, compared female elephants in different settings.
It found that Asian elephants in European zoos lived about 19 years on average, while working elephants at the Myanma Timber Enterprise, who lived and worked with their handlers, lived about 42 years.
The lesson is clear: daily movement, a stable life and close, long-term care make a real difference to how long an elephant lives.
How We Care for Our Elephants
Our 78 elephants live in a tradition where elephant and mahout families have stayed together for generations. Every elephant has its own mahout, who stays with it around the clock.
- Vet checks: every elephant sees a vet every month.
- Food: an adult eats about 200 to 250 kg a day, including fresh green fodder and daliya.
- Work: only 3 to 4 hours a day with visitors.
- Shelter: the elephants sleep in sheds at night.
