Yes, an elephant sanctuary with kids is one of the best family days in Jaipur. At Elefriendride, children aged 2 and above are welcome, and they can feed, paint and walk with the elephants alongside their parents.
This guide covers what children can do, how to keep the visit safe and fun, what to pack, and how to plan the day around young ones.
Elephant Sanctuary with Kids: Quick Facts
- Minimum age: 2 years.
- Group size: at least 2 adults per booking.
- Visit length: 2 to 4 hours.
- Opening hours: every day, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- Distance: 10 to 15 km from Jaipur city centre, about 20 to 25 minutes away.
- Cost: ₹2,500 to ₹5,500 per person for the full experience.
What Kids Can Do With the Elephants
- Feeding: children love holding out sugarcane and watching the trunk reach for it.
- Painting: a colourful, hands-on activity that even small children enjoy.
- Walking: a slow walk beside the elephants with their mahouts.
- Safari: included in the full experience.
- Bathing: from March to October only. Kids usually get happily wet.
Every elephant has its own mahout, who stays with it around the clock. The mahouts guide each activity, so children always have an expert right beside them.
Which Age Enjoys What?
Ages 2 to 5: keep it short and simple. Feeding is usually the highlight. Hold your child's hand, stay close and take breaks in the shade.
Ages 6 to 12: the perfect age. Children can join feeding, painting and walking, and they often ask the mahouts lots of questions.
Teenagers: they enjoy the full experience, including bathing in season, and it makes for great photos to share.
Safety Tips for Children
- Stay with your child at all times, and keep small children within arm's reach.
- Follow the mahout's instructions, and approach the elephants only when they say so.
- Move slowly and speak softly; sudden running or shouting can surprise an animal.
- Keep snacks, drinks and dummies away from the elephant area.
- Wash hands well with soap and water after touching the elephants.
The hand-washing and no-snacks tips follow advice from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for families visiting animals. The CDC notes that children under 5 need extra care around animals, so stay especially close to toddlers.
The Best Time of Day With Kids
Early morning: the best choice for families. It is cooler, children have more energy, and you can be back for lunch and a nap. We open at 7:00 AM.
Midday: in the hot months, avoid it with little ones. From November to February, late morning is pleasant too.
Afternoon: fine in winter, but leave enough time, as the last visits finish by 6:00 PM.
What to Pack for Kids
- Sun hats, sunscreen and plenty of water.
- Closed shoes that can get dusty.
- A full change of clothes, especially in bathing season.
- Wet wipes and a small towel.
- A light jacket for winter mornings.
For adults too, our guide on what to wear to an elephant sanctuary explains the details.
Making It a Learning Day
Children remember the visit better when they learn something new. Before you go, read our guide to what elephants eat together, and ask your child to guess how much an elephant eats in a day.
At the sanctuary, let them ask the mahouts about the elephants' daily routine. It turns a fun outing into a real lesson about animal care.
Plan Your Family Visit
