Elephant Safari vs Elephant Ride in Jaipur: What's the Difference?

Last updated: 16 October 2026 · By Mohit Bhat, Elefriendride

In Jaipur, an elephant safari and an elephant ride are two different experiences. The safari is a longer, relaxed ride inside our sanctuary. The ride is a short, classic trip up the hill to Amber Fort.

Here is how the elephant safari vs elephant ride compare on length, place, cost and timing, so you can pick the one that suits your trip, or do both.

The Elephant Safari at Our Sanctuary

The safari takes place on our sanctuary grounds, at an easy walking pace, with each elephant's own mahout guiding the way. It lasts about 30 to 35 minutes.

It is part of a longer visit of 2 to 4 hours, together with feeding, painting and walking, plus bathing from March to October. Two adults and one child can share an elephant, which makes it a good fit for small families.

The Elephant Ride at Amber Fort

The Amber Fort ride is the famous royal approach to the fort. The elephant meets you at the elephant stand at the foot of the hill and carries you up to the fort in about 15 to 20 minutes.

It runs in the morning only: 7:00 to 10:30 AM in the summer season and 8:00 to 11:30 AM in the winter season. It stops during Navratri, which comes twice a year. You can read about the fort itself on the official Rajasthan Tourism website.

Which One Is Right for You?
  • Choose the safari if you want more time with the elephants, a calm setting and a full hands-on visit.
  • Choose the Amber Fort ride if you want the classic arrival at the fort and the views on the way up.
  • Families with one child: the safari, as 2 adults and 1 child can ride together.
  • Afternoon visitors: the safari, as the Amber Fort ride ends by late morning.
How to Do Both in One Day

Early morning: start with the Amber Fort ride while it is cool, then explore the fort.

Late morning or afternoon: head to our sanctuary for the safari, feeding and painting.

Evening: rest, or enjoy the city lights after dark.

How We Care for Our Elephants

Each of our elephants works only 3 to 4 hours a day and has its own mahout around the clock. A vet checks every elephant once a month.

Only some of our younger, fitter elephants do the Amber Fort ride. We answer common questions openly in Is elephant riding in Jaipur ethical?
