Elephant Ride at Amber Fort, Jaipur: Price, Timings and What to Expect

An elephant ride at Amber Fort in Jaipur costs Rs 2,500 per elephant. Elefriendride is open 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, sits 10-15 km from Jaipur city centre, and a full visit takes 2 to 4 hours including feeding, bathing, walking and painting.

Amber Fort sits on a ridge above Maota Lake, about twenty minutes north of central Jaipur. It is the most photographed place in Rajasthan, and for many visitors the elephants are the reason they came.

This page answers the questions people actually ask before they book: what it costs, when to go, how long it takes, what happens hour by hour, and what the elephants' day looks like. Every number here is ours. Nothing is an estimate.

How much does an elephant ride at Amber Fort cost?

An elephant ride at Amber Fort costs Rs 2,500 per elephant. A full sanctuary experience costs Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,500 per person, and that already includes feeding, bathing, walking and painting. No activity carries a separate charge.

Two prices confuse people, so here is the difference in one line. The ride is priced per elephant. The sanctuary experience is priced per person. We have broken the numbers down further on our elephant ride price in Jaipur page.

What you bookPriceWhat it covers
Elephant ride at Amber FortRs 2,500 per elephantThe ride itself
Full sanctuary experienceRs 2,500 - Rs 5,500 per personFeeding, bathing, walking, painting, photos

What makes the price move

  • Group size. Larger groups are cheaper per head.
  • Season. October to March is peak and prices sit at the upper end.
  • How long you stay. A two-hour visit and a four-hour visit are not the same booking.
  • How many activities you want. Some visitors skip painting; some want a longer walk.

We do not run seasonal discount campaigns or list a headline rate that changes at the gate. The range above is the range. If your group is unusual in size, write to us and we will give you a figure before you arrive.

What are the elephant ride timings in Jaipur?

Elefriendride is open 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, seven days a week. The best times to visit are 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, when it is cooler, the elephants are most active and the light is best.

Time of dayWhat it is like
7:00 - 9:00 AMCoolest part of the day. Elephants are alert and hungry, so feeding and bathing are at their best. Soft light, few people.
9:00 AM - 12:00 PMStill comfortable from October to March. Warm from April onwards.
12:00 - 4:00 PMAvoid this window between April and June. It is genuinely hot.
4:00 - 6:00 PMSecond best slot. Golden light. Good for photographs.

Amber Fort itself opens at 8:00 AM. Many visitors come to us at 7:00 AM, finish by around 10:30 AM, and walk into the fort straight afterwards.

Can you do Amber Fort and the elephant sanctuary in one morning?

Yes. Arrive at Elefriendride at 7:00 AM, finish around 10:30 AM, and reach Amber Fort a few minutes later. The fort opens at 8:00 AM and needs about two hours, so both fit comfortably into one morning.

This is how most of our guests structure the day, and it is the order we recommend. Doing the elephants first means you get the cool hours and the good light, and you are not trying to cram a three-hour visit into a hot afternoon.

It also means you arrive at the fort already understanding what you are looking at. Amber Fort is a Rajasthan Tourism heritage site.

The elephant stables, the ramp and the sheer scale of the gates all read differently once you have spent a morning with the animals themselves.

If you want the rest of the city in the same trip, our day tours in Jaipur page sets out what fits into one day and what does not.

Is it suitable for children and older visitors?

Yes. Feeding, walking and painting suit every age and involve no climbing. Bathing means wet ground and is the one stage where children need an adult beside them. Tell us about anyone with limited mobility when you book and we will adjust the pace.

Children usually settle within the first twenty minutes. Meeting the elephants before touching them is deliberate, and it is what turns nervousness into confidence. By the feeding stage most children have forgotten they were nervous at all.

For older visitors the main thing to know is the ground. The bathing area is wet and uneven. Everything else is flat and unhurried, and there is shade and seating at every stage.

Where is it and how do you get there?

Elefriendride is on Amer Road near K.K. Royal Hotel, Amer, Jaipur 302028. It is 10-15 km from Jaipur city centre, roughly 20-25 minutes by road, and only a few minutes from Amber Fort itself.

  • From the city centre (Pink City, MI Road, Hawa Mahal): 20-25 minutes.
  • From Amber Fort: a few minutes by road.
  • From Jaipur International Airport: about 45 minutes, traffic depending.
  • From Jaipur Junction railway station: about 30 minutes.

An auto-rickshaw or a taxi from the city centre is straightforward. Ask for Amer Road, near K.K. Royal Hotel. If your driver does not know the sanctuary by name, the hotel is the landmark that works.

What happens on a visit, step by step

A full visit at Elefriendride runs about three hours and follows a fixed sequence: arrival and welcome drink, meeting the elephants, feeding, bathing, walking together, painting, then photographs and departure. Most visitors finish in 2 to 4 hours depending on how long they linger.

This is the actual order. It is not a menu you assemble; it is how the day runs, and it is built around when the elephants eat and bathe rather than around the schedule of the people visiting.

StageTimeWhat happens
Arrival and welcome drink15 minYou arrive, sit down, and we explain how the morning works and how to behave around the elephants.
Meeting the elephants20 minYou meet them properly before touching anything. Each elephant has a name and a history, and the mahout tells you both.
Feeding30 minSugarcane, bananas and fodder, fed by hand. This is where most people stop being nervous.
Bathing45 minThe longest and the best part. You are going to get wet. Plan for it.
Walking together30 minWalking alongside the elephants rather than on them. Quiet, and the part guests remember.
Painting30 minTraditional decorative painting on the elephant, using natural, water-soluble colours.
Photographs and departureabout 20 minPhotographs, questions, and goodbyes.

Add those up and you get roughly three hours and ten minutes. A short visit is closer to two hours; a slow one with a large group runs to four.

Is riding an elephant at Amber Fort ethical?

This is the question our UK, US and European guests ask most, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one.

The honest position is that elephant riding is debated, and reasonable people disagree. Some travellers will read everything below and decide a ride is not for them. That is a fair conclusion and we would rather you reach it here than feel misled on arrival.

What we can tell you is how our elephants live. They are Asian elephants in our permanent care, and a visit here is built around feeding, bathing and walking.

Those three stages take up most of your three hours. The ride is one part of a longer day, not the whole of it.

If you would prefer to skip the ride entirely and spend the time feeding, bathing and walking instead, say so when you book. That is a normal request and it changes nothing else about the visit.

We have written separately about whether elephant riding in Jaipur is ethical, including the arguments against it, and we have not edited out the uncomfortable parts.

You can also read about our sanctuary and about Elephant Village Jaipur, which visitors often ask about in the same breath.

  • Water. More than you think in summer.
  • A camera, but keep it away from the bathing area unless it is waterproof.
