Delhi to Jaipur is about 280 km. The fastest trains take around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, a car takes about 5 to 6 hours with traffic, and a flight is about 1 hour in the air.
For most travellers, the train is the easiest choice. Below we compare every option, then show how to plan your first day in Jaipur around your arrival time.
Delhi to Jaipur at a Glance
- Distance: about 280 km by road.
- Train: about 3.5 to 4.5 hours on the fastest trains.
- Car: about 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and stops.
- Flight: about 1 hour in the air, plus airport time.
- Bus: about 5 to 6 hours.
Delhi to Jaipur by Train
The train is comfortable, good value and avoids Delhi's road traffic. The fastest services, such as the Vande Bharat and Shatabdi trains, take roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
The Ajmer Shatabdi leaves New Delhi early in the morning and reaches Jaipur by mid-morning, which gives you most of the day in the city.
Book through IRCTC, Indian Railways' official booking site. Trains fill up quickly from October to March, so book as early as you can and check the latest timetable before you travel.
Delhi to Jaipur by Car
A car with a driver gives you the most freedom. You can leave when you like, stop for meals and keep your luggage with you.
The drive usually takes 5 to 6 hours. Leave Delhi early in the morning to avoid the worst city traffic, and agree all costs, including tolls and parking, before you set off.
Delhi to Jaipur by Flight
The flight itself is only about 1 hour, and several airlines fly the route every day. Jaipur International Airport is in Sanganer, about 10 km from the city centre.
Once you add check-in, security and the ride from each airport, flying often saves little time over a fast train. It makes most sense if you are connecting from an international flight at Delhi.
Delhi to Jaipur by Bus
Tourist buses and state buses run regularly and are the cheapest option, taking about 5 to 6 hours. They suit budget travellers, but a train is usually more comfortable for the same journey time.
Which Option Is Best for You?
- First-time visitors: a morning train, for comfort and an early arrival.
- Families and groups: a car, for luggage, flexible stops and no station transfers.
- Short on time after a long flight: a domestic flight, if the timing works with your arrival.
- Budget travellers: a bus or a non-AC train class.
Plan Your First Day by Arrival Time
Your arrival time decides what you can fit in on day one. This simple plan helps you use it well.
Arrive by late morning: check in, have lunch, then spend the afternoon with elephants. Our sanctuary is 20 to 25 minutes from the city centre and open until 6:00 PM.
Arrive in the afternoon: head to Jal Mahal. Camel rides at the Jal Mahal view point run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and the lake looks lovely towards sunset.
Arrive in the evening: keep it easy with dinner and an early night. Start the next morning at the sanctuary, which opens at 7:00 AM, before the day warms up.
Delhi, Jaipur and the Golden Triangle
Most travellers visit Jaipur as part of the Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. If you are planning all three, see our Golden Triangle tours page.
Jaipur deserves at least two nights. A day trip from Delhi is possible, but even by the fastest train, the return journey takes 7 to 9 hours and leaves little time for the city.
