The best time for an elephant ride at Amber Fort is early in the morning. Rides run only in the morning: from 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM in the summer season and from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM in the winter season.
Within those hours, the first part of the morning is usually the most pleasant, with cooler air and softer light. Here is how to pick the right time for your ride.
Ride Hours at a Glance
- Summer season: 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM.
- Winter season: 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
- Ride length: about 15 to 20 minutes, from the elephant stand up to the fort.
- Riders: 2 adults per elephant. Children aged 2 and above can ride.
- Cost: ₹2,500 per elephant, booked on the spot at the elephant stand.
- Closed: during Navratri, which comes twice a year and changes date each year.
Why the Ride Runs Only in the Morning
Rides stop before the hottest part of the day. Each of our elephants works only 3 to 4 hours a day, and only some of our younger, fitter elephants do the Amber Fort ride at all.
Cooler mornings are better for the elephants and more comfortable for you. That is why there are no afternoon rides.
The Best Time of Morning, Season by Season
Summer: come as close to 7:00 AM as you can. By mid-morning the sun is strong, so an early ride keeps you and the elephant cooler.
Winter: early mornings can be chilly, with average lows around 8 to 10°C in December and January. A ride a little after 8:00 AM, once the sun is up, is often the most comfortable. Bring a light jacket.
October, November, February and March: pleasant almost all morning. Any time within the ride hours works well.
Best Time for Photos
Amber Fort's main gate, Suraj Pol, faces east towards the rising sun. That means the early morning light falls on the gate and the walls as you ride up.
Soft early light is also kinder for photos than the harsh mid-morning sun. Use a phone strap or a small bag, and keep both hands free when the mahout asks.

Plan Your Morning Around the Ride
- 7:00 to 8:00 AM: reach the elephant stand at the start of the ride hours.
- After the ride: explore Amber Fort while it is still cool.
- Late morning: head back towards the city, or spend a few hours at our elephant sanctuary.
- Afternoon: rest, or visit indoor sights such as museums.
Missed the ride hours? You can still reach the fort by jeep or on foot. Our guide to choosing an elephant ride or jeep at Amber Fort explains both.
Planning Around Navratri
Rides stop during Navratri because of the festival at the Shila Mata temple inside the fort. Navratri falls twice a year, in spring and autumn, and the dates change every year.
If your trip falls near Navratri, contact us before you plan your morning and we will confirm the ride days.
A Longer Ride at Our Sanctuary
If you want more time on an elephant, we also offer a ride of about 30 to 35 minutes at our sanctuary, which must be booked in advance.
The sanctuary is 10 to 15 km from Jaipur city centre and open every day from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. See our elephant sanctuary in Jaipur page for the full visit.
